How Much Does Small Business IT Support Cost in 2026?
Small business IT support in 2026 usually costs about $100 to $200 per user per month for a managed IT company, which comes to roughly $500 to $1,000 a month for a five-person office. Hourly "break-fix" help typically runs $150 to $225 an hour, and a full-time IT employee costs far more once benefits are added. Many managed IT companies also set a monthly minimum in the $2,000 to $2,500 range, which is the main reason very small offices end up overpaying.
Below is what each option costs, what you get for it, and who it fits. Every outside figure links to its source at the end of the page.

| Managed IT, advanced security or regulated work | About $200 to $275 per user per month, up to $400 for premium plans | Businesses with strict security or industry rules |
| Hourly break-fix support | About $150 to $225 per hour, often with a two-hour minimum | Offices that rarely have problems |

| Fractional IT leader (part-time CIO) | About $4,000 to $6,000 per month for 8 to 12 hours | Growing companies that need planning, not day-to-day fixes |

| iFixediT Business Pro (remote) | $279.99 per month for 5 people and 5 computers | Small offices with no IT staff that want protection and fixes |
Managed IT companies (MSPs)
A managed service provider takes over your IT for a monthly fee. Plans usually include a help desk, monitoring, updates, security tools and backups.
What it costs. Published 2026 pricing guides cluster around the same range. Dataprise lists plans starting at $102, $158 and $210 per user per month, and says managed IT generally costs $100 to $200 per user. N-able puts standard plans at $110 to $175 per user, advanced security plans at $200 to $275, and premium or regulated plans at up to $400. ARPHost reports fully managed plans of $110 to $185 per user.
For a five-person office at $100 to $200 per user, that is about $500 to $1,000 a month, or $6,000 to $12,000 a year.
The minimum fee trap. Many MSPs will not take a contract below a set amount. One MSP, Bit by Bit, states a $2,000 monthly minimum. Another, BRITECITY, lists a $2,500 monthly floor. If your office has three or five people, a minimum like that can double or triple your real per-person cost. Always ask about minimum seats and minimum monthly spend before you sign.
Best for: offices with 10 or more people, servers or a complex network, or compliance requirements that need a provider to document everything.
Hourly break-fix support
You call someone when something breaks and pay by the hour. There is no monthly fee.
What it costs. BRITECITY lists break-fix work at $150 to $225 an hour, often with a two-hour minimum and an extra charge after hours. Advanced security or consulting work can run higher.
The catch. Nobody is watching your computers between calls, so problems are found late, and a bad month can cost more than a year of a monthly plan.
Best for: very small offices with simple setups and rare problems.
Consumer tech help
Retail tech services fix one device at a time. Best Buy's Geek Squad lists remote software or network troubleshooting at $39.99 and virus removal and repair at $149.99. In-home help costs more, for example $174.99 for Wi-Fi setup.
Best for: a one-off problem on one computer. These services are built for households, not for keeping an office running.
A full-time IT employee
What it costs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for computer support specialists at $62,890 a year (May 2025 data), and for network and computer systems administrators at $99,130. Benefits add a lot: across private industry, benefits make up 30 percent of total compensation, according to the BLS. That puts a support specialist at roughly $90,000 a year in total cost, or about $7,500 a month, before equipment and software.
Best for: companies with enough computers and people to keep a full-time person busy every day.
A fractional or part-time IT leader
A fractional CIO is a senior IT person you hire for a few hours a month to plan, budget and choose vendors. MentorCruise lists advisory work of 8 to 12 hours a month at $4,000 to $6,000 a month.
Best for: growing companies that need strategy. A fractional leader usually does not fix printers or reset passwords, so you still need day-to-day help.
What about antivirus and security software?
Security software is a separate line in your budget, and it is cheap compared to support. Microsoft lists Defender for Business at $3.00 per user per month (paid yearly), and Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which includes it, at $22.00 per user per month (paid yearly).
The software is not the expensive part. The expensive part is someone noticing when an alert fires, when protection stops running, or when a computer falls behind on updates. That watching is what you are really paying an IT provider for.
What a five-person office might pay per month
| Option | Monthly estimate for five people |
|---|---|
| Managed IT at $100 to $200 per user | About $500 to $1,000, or the provider's minimum if it is higher |
| Managed IT with a $2,000 minimum | $2,000 |
| Break-fix, four hours of help a month at $150 to $225 | About $600 to $900, and nothing in between calls |
| Full-time support specialist | About $7,500 including benefits |
| iFixediT Business Pro | $279.99 |

Where iFixediT fits
iFixediT is remote IT support on simple monthly plans for small businesses with no IT department. It does not replace a full MSP for an office with servers, a complex network or compliance paperwork. It covers the work most small offices actually need: keeping computers protected and fixing what breaks.
- Business is $169.99 a month for 3 people and 3 computers. Business Pro is $279.99 a month for 5 people and 5 computers. Extra computers are $24.99 each per month. There are no seat minimums beyond the plan you pick, and you can cancel any time.
- Paid plans include Protected computer: security software and health checks on covered computers, watched by our team during support hours.
- Fixie, the AI helper, works through common problems first. On paid plans, a live remote agent can step in on the same case, and each paid plan includes a set number of priority live sessions a month.
- Fixie can run a few approved fixes on Windows computers today. On a Mac, Fixie walks you through the steps. Anything involving files, accounts or security settings goes to a person.
- On-site visits are coming soon.

How to choose
- Count people and computers. Under ten people with no servers, a monthly remote plan or careful break-fix use usually costs less than a traditional MSP.
- Ask about minimums. A low per-user price means little if there is a $2,000 floor.
- Ask who watches your computers between problems. Monitoring is what stops small problems from becoming expensive ones.
- Check what is not included. On-site visits, after-hours work, new projects and software licenses are often extra.
- Get it in writing. Ask for the monthly total for your exact headcount, not a per-user price.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a small business pay for IT support?
Most published guides put managed IT at about $100 to $200 per user per month. For a very small office, compare that against the provider's monthly minimum and against a remote plan built for small teams.
Is managed IT worth it for a five-person company?
It can be if you have servers, sensitive records or a complex network. If your needs are mostly computers, email, printers and Wi-Fi, a minimum fee of $2,000 a month is hard to justify, and a smaller remote plan may cover what you need.
Is hourly IT support cheaper than a monthly plan?
Only if problems are rare. At $150 to $225 an hour, a few calls a month cost as much as a monthly plan, and nobody is watching your computers in between.
Do I need an IT company at all?
Not always. See alternatives to a full-time IT person and how to fix office computer problems without an expensive technician.
